Gemstone Studies for Intermediates offers the chance to learn about the main gemstone varieties and gem colours used in jewellery from Graham Tom, a diamond expert of some 25 years. You will be able to train your eye to recognise a variety of unique characteristics in all gemstones and gain tips to help you distinguish synthetics, simulants and treatments. The topics covered on this course include an in-depth study of the mining, structure, practical characteristics and optical properties of gemstones. Enamelling for Intermediates is suitable for anyone who has some experience of working in enamel and would like to take their work to the next level. Learners should have had some experience in basic enamelling techniques such as Dry Sifting and Wet packing or have completed the Beginners Enamelling Short course. Led by award winning designer Regina Aradesian, you will be creating samples on copper and silver to learn and practice more complicated enamelling techniques including Champleve and Cloisonne enamelling. You will have a beautiful enamelled silver piece by the end of this course. This course will then lead you onto the advanced Enamelling course which covers plique-a-jour enamelling techniques. Another Holts course due to commence in the near future is Level 3 Jewellery Manufacture and Design, a technical skills course which is seen as preparation for working in the professional jewellery trade – either for a company or for yourself. The course offers the high level craft skills, knowledge, design and rendering skills needed to design and make professional quality pieces. This course will also help you understand more about the business of jewellery, including costings, sourcing materials, production planning and preparation, sales and marketing.
